Client Server mode

Post by banjaxster »

I still use c/s mode mostly for importing user data and new user info
I have a few games that will work in c/s mode for example the game called Spot
I would love to see the c/s mode updated so more could use it,most people now days use windows or mac and a dos looking program scares them away

Thanks for your feedback - how many of your users (percentage) would you think use c/s mode?

i really feel a web-driven replacement over the "client" is best. seen the java remote sysop panel? something like that.

I gotta say I agree.

I always found C/S mode to be "neat". Made the board feel like a grown-up app instead of just this game and chat platform. As the libraries aged though, its pretty tough to try to use now.

That being said, the idea of turning it into a web app rather than a full desktop app, would really help adoption. If you can run it on anything with a web browser, that covers allll the bases.

I think the C/S mode in its current form (as a suite of applications, on top of how outdated it looks) does not suit the modern era. I do think that a web app would be worth looking into, maybe by those in the community with web app development experience.

This would be reliant on an appropriate backend service developed for the core platform. Keep the ideas coming!

I may be getting too excited here, but if the board could expose some sort of API, then anyone could hit the API, and connect what ever web front end... or mobile app.... they wanted to the bbs back end. Now we're getting into the current era of web apps. ;)

honestly you could simulate the c/s app with a web app. just take a look at the remote sysop menu java applet already there.
I don't know about you but just looking at the graphics of the c/s client makes me think im in middle school again.
I personally was never a fan, games requires c/s versions, the whole thing. if we look at synchrionet and the ability to play the games through an rlogin connection directly from the web portal we could push every Addon into production without having to rewrite anything. now that is from a games perspective. There may be another feature someone likes that this won't work for.
the menu editor was nice.

I really liked the C/S Sysop module. If something that worked in Active H could be made, that would remove my need for C/S. It would of course need adequate protection, like double passwords and few logins before locking out the hackers.

As for games I like the idea of AH front end to telnet/RLogin for external and internal games.

Anything allowing remote sysop via web on MBBS would need some serious security re-vamping. These systems were "secure" in an era where 6-character passwords were considered good enough. by todays standards they're pretty terrible. Ideally, the entire board needs a securty upgrade.
