installed but confused

Hi,

I recently installed the v10 beta on a free system (Win2012r2, I tried to install it on an XP but that obviously was not the right system) to test how to set up MajorBBS. I downloaded the file "TheMajorBBSv10_beta_Full.zip" file. I ran the installation which installed to e:\bbsv10.

I ran the configuration (changed bbs name and sysop and left the rest as-is and entered my activation key).

I read the README file which stated to set the wgsappgo.exe to run as administrator.

After that, I'm somewhat stumped. When I run the file, nothing happens. I don't see an extra service running.

I downloaded the 6.2 pdf file but I'm not entirely sure that's applicable to the v10.

Any help and directions appreciated. I do apologize for being ignorant in the ways of setting up MajorBBS.

Thanks

Welcome!

MBBS V10 runs on current Windows based machines which is why windows XP will not work.

Also, the v6.2 manual won't help much, you would be best to look at the help files in the DOCS folder. We are working converting the help files to a PDF.

Now that you have the software installed, you can start setting it up using the Configuration editor (using the icon or running wgscnf.exe). There are hundreds of settings that can be made here however by default it should be enough to start running.

When you said you left the other options as default, what did you mean by that? Did you put in your IP address, DNS address, hostname, etc?

When you run the program, what happens? Do you get any visual indication that some has run? Are you prompted to allow the app to run in admin mode?

Hi Duckula,

When I said I left the default configuration, I just meant the address and phone #. The dns and the ip, I had set to a local address.
I took a look at the *.doc files, but haven't yet found the right one which helps me get started.

I found the user documentation though.

The installer program should not have prompted you for an address and phone number, or do you mean you logged into your installed BBS and were prompted for that information?

You can always login to bbs.themajorbbs.com via telnet to chat which might be easier.

Hi,

Sorry, to clarify I meant the I left the "Company Name, Address (line 1, 2) and Modem Phone" settings to default
and setup the "Sign-up" accounting model, the TCP/IP channel type.and the TCP/IP configuration.

Once I did that and the configuration quit, I'm left with the e:\bbsv10 directory.

I entered the e:\bbsv10 directory and took a look at all the *.doc and *.txt files. None of them seem to pertain to starting the BBS.

As for the *.exe files, the closest I think that pertains to the 'server' is wgserver.exe; which I ran with no parameters. Without parameters, nothing seemed to happen. With a /help parameter, the server seemed to start up in a command window and then after a bit of scrolling, it closes down so fast, I can't follow what is going on. Is there a log of what happens when I run, say "wgserver /login"?

I apologize for being dumb.

Ok, I think I've finally gotten it running. I rebooted the system and ran the wgsappgo.exe and it looks like it's running.

Sorry for the noise. I suppose I should've rebooted the system first.

I also had the issue with C:\BBSV10\wgsappgo.EXE not doing anything.
I just killed W32MKDE.EXE and restarted wgsappgo.exe as administrator (was too quick initially and ran as unprivileged!)

For the initial IP setup, I just got it working by setting
"IPADDR" set to AUTO.
My local (dhcp) IP address then became accessible through telnet.
(you need to do it in WGSCNF.EXE)

Also had to update te default Windows CMD.EXE size
(Right-click on command prompt title bar, Properties, Layout tab, Width=80 Height=25)

Other than that, all looks good on my Win 10 VM !

Thanks Kracken - glad it is working for you.

The W32MKDE.EXE issue is one that needs to be addressed as if MBBS tries to start when it is in a certain state it will fail - we might need to kill that process if no other MBBS processes are running.
