Hello All,

Just wanted to say Hi to the other fellow sysops and let you all know, another Worldgroup system has gone online and is joining the family!

Our focus is mainly chat, with some games :) And we are working closely with Questman to bring Worldlink back from the dead.

Anyhow, it's great to be back, hopefully, together we can all cause a bit of BBS revival :)

i considered making a windows API client worldlink thing so it would be sort of like myspace im or yahoo messenger only contacts are grouped by system ID but so many things came up this year i have had like no time, i thought i could revive it when a system admin contacted me to do some modding to their WG server as an intranet resource for their company as a way to communicate woth employees even at home but they werent looking into getting that deep and with Tele-Arena 2008 BETA 1 just finished now im tied up with bug fixing and prepping for BETA 1.1

thing with WG is yes its still highly used but most are trying to get out of A/A and C/S usage and are more interested in getting things A/H like the web-telecon and what not, WL comes in active-h form but a windows gui client would really take off and get people interested again, and if done correctly and the proper hooks were done you could even get on board with windows live and yahoo to plug in to their api as well.

as Rick has said before, once WG is updated to the mainstream internet
it will take off again and the first step is to get it compiled into a more modern compiler.

Although I see what you are saying, I have to disagree with that.

MySpace and Facebook users are more visual, younger generation. It's not that they cannot enjoy what a BBS has, its just extremely unfamiliar to them.

Sure A few people will do it as a novelty, but its really not going to relaunch bbsing to the mainstream again.

What is needed, is a few things.

1) WG systems are not BBSs, Sure they use similar technology but they need to be refered to as "Online Entertainment Systems". There are programs out there that do the "BBS" role much better than WG. Sure its similar, but deep down there are not the same thing. WG Focuses more on real-time user interaction.

2) A simple URL (easy to remember) is needed where all active WG systems can be listed, with advertisements, where they are located, and what they offer the users. This ties into #3

3) A Online System's main advantage is that it is not-global. Systems should cater two either a regional theme, or a specific topic. Trying to run a system to get any and every caller is just not going to work. I think the years have shown that.

4) Cooperation. Most of us are not in this for money anymore, and lately there appear to be more systems online then users for them. All of us should start either logoff taglines saying try this other system, etc. Maybe a user on my System will like yours and vise versa, the only way they can know is to know whats out there.

5) NEW GAMES. It's all great that games can fixed and updated to work with new versions, but really, how many times can we re-hash 10 year old games? Focusing on new franchises is really where its at. The "Killer Apps" for MBBS/WG have long been mimicked now on other systems, something needs to appear that makes WG stand out again, and I don't mean MajorMUD, its also, very old.

These will at least keep the systems alive, and hopefully the operators interested in running them until a new version can come out with more features.

If you have a system, email me or login to TLS and let me know about it, I will be happy to start a logoff list on my system, I think we should all do the same!

1) agreed to a point, however to be classified as an 'online entertainment system' that seems to me more of a web-driven theme, sure we all remember 'online' as dialup bbs's hell some of us can even remember going 'online' to places like prodigy where it was X amount per minute on peak and x amount off peak, wg 3.3 began the whole portal theming and modules can be written to work from online look at the web-teleconference, all it is, is a active-html module that emulates the c/s and a/a teleconference.
i changed my systems name from The ArcticZone BBS to ArcticZone Online Entertainment back in 2001.

2) yeah to a point i have one up running off the powerlink sql database which im gonna switch over to plug into the GALSQL.DLL that generates web and php pages with specific system info, however i recently locked data entry until i can come up with a verification system so not anybody can say yeah this is my bbs telnet on in, i want it to be al ist of only authentic systems not ones generated from keygens, preservation will only succeed if we can weed out the pirated systems.
but i am on the same page with ya.

3) actually bbsing is more gameplay nowadays, peole use IM products for communication, but games like majormud,ta,farwest all are still heavy hitters and attract traffic, since FW is long gone i have been working on a simple trivia module so sysops can relive that joy.

4) yeah agreed somewhat however look at greatermud, they redid majormud and they have a very largecommunity, im almost finished redoing tele-arena and got a quite large listserver i provide updates not to just sysops who want it for their server but also users that wanna play again and game designers that wanna make use of the database exporting tools so they can make 3rd party content addons with no coding knowledge needed.

5) Definately!
i have been writing down ideas for XanthaMUD which will be a mud for WGNT exclusively that has a nicely designed crafting system, not just hack and slash, has a ton of other things going on, craftng, skills, proficiencies, player ran economy by crafting items to be sold/traded to other towns or regions, etc....
but its gonna take more than MUDS, so im looking at other companies and thinking about expanding my line of product out to interfaces like ebay that uses the wg credit system, hot-or-not, dating sites with visual elements, databasing engines which any sysop could mod into someting like a bbs lister program, classified ads, etc.....
