Hey guys, I'm new to the board here but I have been running a version of WG/MajorBBS for the past7 years or so. I have a fairly active group of regulars that use it for chats, etc. We've been trying to track down some of the old favorites using MBBS or WG2.0 DOS, looking for old software, etc. I was wondering if there's a central repository that the board is using for software, floppy images, etc? I own a hosting company and have a good amount of space and bandwidth available. I would be more than willing to lend a hand if we can start getting the software into a repo. I am afraid that some of these floppies are going to start disintegrating before we can get the software off them. Either PM me or respond here.. I would love to get some of this stuff together.

On a side note, I'm working on getting some BBS software up and running in various VMWare images. I'll post links to those ones I get it nailed down.. I"m having some weirdness with drivers in DOS and VMWare (imagine that? ) so it might be a little while.

Actually, a few of us are working on just that - and I think what we need to do is set-up a central place and then have everyone mirror it - the more mirrors, the better.

Randy owns host.net, and probably could best provide the master copy. Then we have guys like Dan (dspain on here), RichInFl, me, and now you, etc that would host mirrors... so that there'd always be copies and always be bandwidth.

I'm running my DOS 6.25 BBS (bbs.elwynor.com) on VMWare. It works great. The only caviat is that because the DOS versions poll non-stop, it pings the processor at 100%. The only way to really "fix" that would be to rewrite the DOS versions with threading..

So you can't have multiple DOS BBSes in VMs on one box... not efficiently anyway.

I would also be willing to mirror the files, as probably 40% of all my new user signups come online just to download files. In fact, a new user signed up the other day and downloaded around 200 files in one day.

Since changing to the new server, I now have more room to add cd or dvd-rom drives - it'd be great if all of the mods could fit on 1 or 2 dvds.

I don't have a t-3 connection like some people, but that doesn't stop them from downloading from my board.

What version of VMWare are you using? The free d/l or the enterprise version? I have VMware for Unix which allows me to run DOS, Windows, NT on a Linux box, it seems to work fine, though I don't know if they still have that version out.

I am running VMWare Server 1.03 on DL380 G4s running on CentOS 4.4 throughout my hosting environment. I run VMWare Virtual Infrastructure 3.0 extensively through out my production environments at my full time gig. VMware Server 1.03 is free, fast, and has a ton of support. The worstation product is nice, has some experimental OS support, and has better snapshot capabilities.

I almost forgot, my board is the "The Bamboo Lounge" (bbs.bamboolouge.com). It has been around since about 1999 or so.. I started it up after the Sysop of the IMPosium went a little haywire. IMPosium was started after the large board Argus in Lexington, MA was shut down.

I have to say it has been a real challange finding documentation, software, and support for the board. I bought a large box of floppies/manual/licenses for MBBS stuff awhile back off of ebay. I have been looking for it for about 2 months now.. ever since I moved I can't seem to find it. I am really bummed out because it had a number of unopened software and goodies.

I would be really interested in getting a file repository up, even if it is initially semi-private. I have multiple hosting sites all with 100Mbit connections into my network.

If someone's DOS session in VMWare is eating up the CPU, then they probably haven't added the utility from VMWare tools to their AUTOEXEC.BAT on the virtual machine. That is supposed to allow the DOS sessions to idle, it's in the VMWare documentation.

That's really not the case when running MBBS/WG in DOS under VMWare. There is an issue with the way the software constantly polls interrupts that causes 100% CPU usage.
