trying to set system up again - forgot how to

Post by dcgtls »

Well years ago I shut down my system but decided to start using it again.
I have completely forgotten how to do things and could use some help.
I am running WG3.3
I can not remember how to add installed modules to the Menu. The first one I am trying is Major Mud but can not access it in the menu editor. I ran my system for several years in Las Vegas back in the late 80's and mid 90's. I did alot of Beta testing for the ISV's and still have all of my modules for 6.25, WG3.0, 3.1, 3.2 and just a few for 3.3. I had only used 3.3 for a very short time when my job moved me and I shut it down put everything in boxes and never thought about it until a few days ago.
I figure that I will try working with 3.3 and try to locate the owners of my modules and get updates/activations from 3.2 to 3.3. I am not sure if 3.3 is the way to go after reading some posts that it is less stable than 3.2 and would like some advice.

So any help would be great.

I read through the forums here and see that they have done a complete wipe of all the old posts as well as cleared out inactive users so I had to create a new account. This is a shame since there was always alot of good information. I also can not access www.gcomm.com, it seems to have been shut down.

Thanks in advance
Dave

Oh BTW I am trying to run it on a Vista system and the core is working without any issues, I can use the client to access it just fine.

What was your system name in Vegas? That's my location and I did a lot of BBS hopping back in the day :)

>>My opinion. I use 3.2 running under Windows Enterprise Server 2003. I have found that to be the most stable combination for WG and all the modules I run and test. I also liked Windows Server 2000 And Windows Server Standard 2003. Windows XP works for a smaller system. I never could get it to run under Vista. But I have found a lot of things don't run under Vista :)

How can we help?

Don

Regarding Vista - (it may or may not apply to you depending on where you installed WG).

Prior to Vista, a lot of Windows Programs installed the data files in the Program Files folder where the program itself resided. Windows Vista still uses the Program Files folder for program installations but does not allow you to access data files in those folders. If your WG was installed in the Program Files Directory, there could be an issue. Since I don't know of any way to make WG look in the Documents folder on Vista for Data files in keeping with the Windows Vista guidelines, WG would essentially not run any add-ons.

Originaly my Girlfriend was using the system under the name "Sourcery" which was used for minority bussiness contacts and such. Later I re-did the system for entertainment under the name "Plug ~n~ Play!", it was an adult based system. If I remember we had 25 lines at the time because that was all the the phone company could get us. We had over 100 active members.
We had alot of fun running the system. I had to shut it down when the gas company transfered me to So. Cal.

I installed WG at the root of C in WGSERV as is recomended. I also log to computer in with the Administrator account and have the UAC turned off. Both the server and client run fine under Vista unlike trying to do anything in XP.
I have installed MajorMud to the WGSERV directory, it shows up in the utilities and I added my activation codes in but just can not remember how to make it show up in the Menu so that it can be used.

Look for WGSRUNMT.EXE in the main WG folder. That's the program you want to use to build your menu tree.

OK, I am still unable to add MajorMud to the menu even with that editor. The problem is that I do not know what file to point to. Do you know which file to use for MajorMud?

I did find that alot of the utilities will not accept the F keys unless I use the On-Screen Keyboard in Vista.

I need to dig through the rest of my boxes and dig out all of my other Add-ons like TW2002 & TLORD. I may even try to setup a VMware on my system and clone my doors PC into it and try to port through to it.

yeah if using vista install to c:\wgserv program folder is a bitch.
also the HLP files are no longer used in vista im currently redoing em as HTM files.

after running WGSRUNMT LINK AS MODULE PAGE IT WILL BE MajorMUD the name.
the majormud plus will auto link if you link majormuds core module.

another thing with vista is you cant properly edit text variables.
