Router settings

I have the MBBS all set up and able to telnet between the computers on the network but when i try to connect to the bbs by putting in my IP address(real one) I am unable to connect. I have Linksys wrt54G and forwarded the MBBS port 23 to 23 and both (UDP TCP) to the correct 192.168.1.102. Any ideas ?

also i noticed some NIC cards allow LAN traffic but not WAN.
what model NIC ya got? and ICO or MTCP?

I dont think they firewalled 23 but i figured i give it a shot on the router to forward it since it was not letting me connect. I am also running 6.25 Major/TCP.

hmm i dont think i ever ran into trouble with RTL but to make sure i threw mbbs and mtcp on a system with an rtl8139 NIC and worked fine.

autoexec.bat:

came online, initialized MajorBBS 6.25

in config i set channel 1 to be TELNET 1-256
also set ip address to 192.168.1.101
set DNS to 192.168.1.1
set GATEWAT to 192.168.1.1

opened 23 to 192.168.1.101 in router (linksys)

came up and allowed incoming traffic.

recheck your config settings within the software.

The problem may not be with your router. When I set mine up, I went through all the router settings just like you and finally (with some help from my ISP), realized that the telnet server also had to be set up on my dsl modem. Once I set it up on the modem, everything worked fine.

What needs to be said to them? I got a cable modem and would like to see about allowing it to be done.

It wasn't so much getting them to do something. I had to change the settings on my modem. First you have to get to the modem settings page. Mine uses the IP 192.168.1.254. Not sure if that is standard or if different modems use different IPs. You will have to check your modem manual or online support. Once on the settings page, I have a tab for gaming where I had to define the telnet server (I also defined the HTTP server there). After that, make sure all the port forwarding and IP info is right and it should work. Again, this is how I had to fix mine. Don't know if you're having the same problem, but it's worth a shot.

make sure your router supporrts loopback.
have someone else not on your LAN telnet to your WAN and see if they connect.

So your saying that even if i can't connect telneting to my own IP, someone from the outside maybe able to?

Not sure what loopback is can i just look at the router and find out.. What is loopback?

I believe it may be the modem though but i also think that Optimumonline does not support "servers". Anyway way around porting 23?

Sure.. map the port... so that incoming port 2323 goes to bbs port 23..

The problem with so many dsl and cable modems are that they are also routers in themselves. I'm using windstream dsl, and their speetstream modems are also routers. I remedied the problem by bypassing the modem's login system and let my linksys router take care of it.

Each setup may be different, but I believe I was able to set the modem as just a connection between the router and the internet by doing a hard reset on the modem and not logging back in to it, per some instructions I got from the windstream website. They stated that if you log in to the modem after it's been hard reset, the modem takes back control of the routing functions.

Then, I had to set my linksys router to pppoe and then setup the login and password information. Also, remember to turn the dhcp server off, because the routing functions won't work with them on. This means you'll have to assign all of your PCs their own IP addresses, even ones not running the bbs/servers.

I don't know if this will help in your case or not, but just another idea out there.

Looks like the whole thing was my set up.. It first instructed me to set the IP as a different on than my router. I finally just set it as my IP and it worked. Amazing And just in time for the Jet game..

Also set up the Twars 2002 Gold that i have registered years ago and figure out how to attach that to the MBBS. Any ideas?

Connect to it thru Rlogin or telnet, search the message forums for Rlogin thier is a few posts on how to conect to it.
