I think the software name WorldGroup is cool and all, but come on...MajorBBS just sounds awsome in a major way (pun intended).

Just my two cents.

But Rick do you have the rights to Major also?

That would most likely split up all the people between WG and MajorBBS Brand name!

Something new comes out for MajorBBS so to speak stays with MajorBBS branding..

Well, it would only be a name change really...not a change in the actual software.

Actually, Worldgroup is not trademarkable as there was a software product called that that predated Galacticomm's application. Further, there's a company called that.

I definitely favor a name change.

Yes I favor the name change also...I also found a Galacticomm Software company doing business in NJ.

Who knows, but I do like the fact of keeping Major some where in the brand name!

Well, the main reason for the WorldGroup name was to bring it to the business world. It did somehow leave the hobbiest sysop out in the cold for a bit of time. It's not to say that support wasn't there for the hobbiest and module development still did happen from various ISVs.

Actually, it was a combination of the name change and the change in attitude; as a hobbiest user I DEFINITLY felt a change in focus and felt that I was not as important as the corporate user. Particulary as the pricing was sky high. And the same applies to many of the ISV's.

MajorComm..WorldComm?

I've always been partial to MajorBBS. Brings back fond memories but kind of limits how to market the software to the corporate world. Maybe a split version...hobbiest on one side and the corporate users on the other.

Actually, I always preferred The MajorBBS also..fact, if you go to my site you will see MajorBBS..not Worldgroup. I originally suggested various flavors to accomadate all the old users with the intent of eventually migrating them all to whatever new version is developed...

The MajorBBS v7.0 for DOS <you can still get DOS or Win98 to use>
The MajorBBS v3.? for NT
The MajorBBS v1.? for Linux/Unix

A BBS of the scale of Major BBS (and a few others) was:

- A turnkey back-office central all-in-one network system
- A turnkey customer support portal solution
- A turnkey entertainment/customer content system
- A development platform for business as well as entertainment services built on top of a solid and completely integrated system

In short, it was a platform that included a lot of things bundled, made it easy for the small business to operate like a big business, and allowed non-technical people to provide services to remote users easily.

A package for these things still is necessary and can be successful.

The term BBS NOW, however, means message forums to some people, or an archaic telephone-related technology to others.

I guess in order to keep it marketable for both sides; a name like MajorComm might do the trick. It would also help establish a good footing while the transition is made from gcomm.com, worldgroupware.com or netvillage.com as they sell WorldGroup and this could help alleviate any confusing.

I believe a name change will help to distinguish this package from other bulletin board software packages such as SynchroNet, Mystic or EleBBS. This will also allow the flexibility to market this to corporations as an intranet suite allowing for pages, forums and email but one would have to find a way to break the amount of members that could be online at one time as well as updating for BTRIEVE to a more SQL system to have a better footing within a relational database or even create a object oriented database system.

Making this transition can be tricky and is not without peril but if done right, it could benefit Galacticomm as well as corporate and hobbyist alike.
