Using MBBS 6.25 with Windows XP

Thank you all for being such great people and willing to help all of us that havn't done this kind of stuff in a long time, if ever.

I used to be a user of a bbs for over 10 years, and loved it. I miss being able to play a few of those games so got my hands on a copy of a few things from a friend of mine who used to run the bbs I used (he shut it down about 6 years ago).

I got MajorBBS 6.5 from him and was hoping that someone would be able to help me get it up and running again. I have a windows xp pro pc, but havn't got a clue as to where to start since mbbs wont run. I've tried a dos emulator befor, but then i can't get any incomming telnet connections to it...

I'm not looking for to much, i think he gave me the 16 user licence, but it might have been the 8. Either way, if i could be able to get a quick and dirty list of what else I might need, and a few instructions on what to install first (he didn't have any of the instructions for the software he gave me, just the zip files and licence info, he threw out most of it, and only kept a few cd's of stuff)...

Thank for any help and consideration.

I don't think you can. mbbs was written on dos and uses hardware calls. and a NT based system like XP
won't allow direct hardware calls.

Even using a program like VMWare?

It should run under VMWare and/or Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007. Unfortunately, MBBS 6+ did not support incoming/outgoing Telenet calls, it was written for multiple modem connections using serial ports.

I'm not sure if MajorTCP/IP works with 6.+ though.

I was also given what the person told me was needed to run it to accept telnet calls, viacom something i think, i'm at work now and don't have the files in front of me... I do believe it was made for major bbs, and it's what he used to use when he ran the bbs...

my computer doesn't even have a modem, but i'm looking to get my hands on a copy of win nt 4.0, and win 98 se..

Well, I'll start playing with the programs once I get the os's... Might have to get a copy of dos 6.22, havn't thought about that yet:)

I run bbs.elwynor.com on VMWare. That said, it uses Vircom. I have ICO1 and ICO2 available for the DOS bbses.. I've never tried either with v6...

But if you want to try it, you're welcome to it.
