vmware testing

Post by Malakai »

After testing vmware out on my dual xeon server with win xp pro, I was thinking it wasn't a good alternative to dos... I was testing both mbbs 6.25 and wg1.01... with vmware 4, both would run, but it got random freezes, and probably 90% of the time when the bbs went to cleanup mode, the guest os would hard freeze.

I then upgraded to vmware 6.something... mbbs quit working completely, and wg 1.01 would come online and seemed to do ok MOST of the time, except on cleanup time.... One time it actually did cleanup, and when it came back up, it got some type of error and hard froze...

So, in vmware 6, there seemed to be less compatibility, and it took just a bit more ram to run.

This was pretty discouraging.... but I just wanted to try it on another PC... So, I installed vmware 4 and the same mbbs/wg1.01 setup on a windows 2000 pc, and it works about flawlessly... I've forced cleanup about 10 times in a row on it, and it went through fine... i've also let it do cleanup a couple times on its own, and it did fine...

The main differences from the two computers are that one was running a dual xeon system with windows xp, and the other was running a single cpu system with windows 2000.. I don't know if the problem was the dual cpus or the OS....

Anyway, I setup the guest OS as DOS 5 with some mem managers/files taken from windows 95. It's been running stable on the win 2k system for the last few days.

The only success I have had with dual CPU systems has been with Windows Server (NT 4.0/2000/2003). Never had any luck with XP and dual cpu's.

I'v been running a test WG system using MS Virtual PC 2007 on a Windows Server 2003 for over 5 months now with no problem.
