Would it be possible to setup Synchronet's fidonet/usenet server to serve my worldgroup system newsgroups?

I'm not sure what you're trying to do - if you just want to get newsgroup postings, you can do that without Synchro...

I want to offer newsgroups to the worldgroup bbs. I've read before that you had to have dnews or pay for some one else to feed them to you, but was wondering if there was a way to make synchronet do that instead.

I have Dnews running on a server and I can suck any newsgroup from my upstream provider and then feed them to you. I can also host and feed local newsgroups and I can turn listserver email messages to forums as well. So if you have a listserver that you are a member of you can make a forum on your bbs and share the list with your users.

MajorFido I'm not sure what happened to that module I never
purchased it myself but it did do FidoNet through Majorbbs.

most isps offer free nntp access nowadays anyhow.
im a comcast commercial customer and even when i was a default home user i got netnews.comcast.net for free
then i setup synchro to poll that for the newsgroups i setup in my newslink.js file
but worldgroup does the nntp feeds just like synchro.
if you need nntp access set your bbs to feed from arcticzone.dyndns.org
on port 119 and ill add your ip as an authorized system to poll.

then you dont have to pay for nothing just poll me whenever.

anyhow im a net229 broadcaster i hub the master hub directly and i can transform the packets into QWK extension and then have it running off of a qwk net on my synchronet server

and i wanan get with joe to put together a new majornet so to speak so everyone can get back on the scene.

im also currently working on a QWK network forums module just like synchronet uses and each system would be polled at cleanup and messages transferred.

the last bench test went good except it didnt like long filenames
or file names with multiple extensions like alt.test.majorbbs

so ill keep yall informed

Well, I tried to set it up on my isp's news server, but it didn't work.. Maybe i'll try again first. If that doesn't work, and I need to use one of your news servers, will it be ok if I am on a static ip?

dont need static, let me know what newsgroups you want ill subscribe to em takes all of 10seconds

well, i just tested it out again on my news server.. it doesn't pull the messages... and when i write a message, i get an error "NNTP CLIENT DISCONNECT - 2 500 Unsupported (B74D0000.$$S) - So i'll give that up hehe..

I'm going to email you with the newsgroups i want at your msn address so that it doesn't clutter up the forums...

You need what is called an IHAVE feed to get nntp into the bbs.
That is done from a NNTP server. The server you are getting your feed from has to set the newsgroups that you want to have feed to you. Worldgroup does not pull messages from the server like your news client does.

I have all the forums setup on the bbs now and it pointing to arcticzone.dyndns.org and port 119 open and routed to the worldgroup pc.. hopefully, all of the config stuff is correct.. I guess we'll know when/if it works..

Still playing with it... Still remember everything just strange looking at the new console rather than the old mbbs console... Have to read a lot of stuff and so forth, should be a minute.

well, apparently, it's not working.. all i'm getting is.. "NNTP CONNECTION TIMEOUT - Connection timed out" and no new messages on the newsgroups i have setup...

You need what is called an IHAVE feed to get nntp into the bbs.
That is done from a NNTP server. The server you are getting your feed from has to set the newsgroups that you want to have feed to you. Worldgroup does not pull messages from the server like your news client does.

What internet option are you useing? (AIO-MajorTCP)

I'm using DSPAIN's feed (dont' know if he's using an IHAVE service or not, but I assume he does to offer worldgroup newsgroups) and worldgroup 3 nt's ICO..

it seems like it's connecting now, but it's still not getting any new messages, and it's also getting this error "NNTP CLIENT DISCONNECT - 2 440 posting not allowed (B7240000.$$S)

Are you using DNEWS, DSPAIN? If not, it probably won't work. I guess we'll try Joe's DNEWS server if we can't get this working properly :/

And if that doesn't work, I'll just bypass worldgroup's nntp functions alltogether and have synchronet host the newsgroups through qwk networking...

MjrFido was Crystal Vision. They also produced a RelayNet mailer for Major BBS. Both programs did their mail offline. There was a product called DBSMail that handled Fido connections and importing while the BBS was online.

I remember major fido as well.. There were several dialup bbs systems that used it back in the dialup days, although I'm not sure what exactly it did different. Was it just a mailer and tosser?

When I ran the old PCBoard BBS, I used the pcboard mailer for fidonet, and that thing sucked. It was a pain to setup and didn't work correctly. I think most people used frontdoor or some thing like that back then, including pcboard sysops. Not many people liked the built in mailer/tosser.

Our local fidonet hub actually used pcboard too. He had a satellite connection, which I thought was pretty cool at the time. His board was a pay access board, but unfortunately, I don't think he got many subscribers. He had like 23 lines, and when I logged on to it, there was never any one on it. I guess those extra phone lines only came in handy at the 2am callouts when he called all of the area's bbs systems to supply fido. What I wanna know is.. did those people get paid to be fido hubs, or did they just spend all of that money on phone lines and PCs to do it all free?

It was unpaid - hubs were hubs for free. But often, we required folks under us to call us for their mail, and we called upstream.

I was the North American hub for SIGNet (zone 26), the 2nd largest fido-net other than FidoNet.

I also started my own fido called TCSNet, as well as did the technical work and initial hosting for my friend's network CCINet.

I was a member of most of the fido nets... alternet, signet, fidonet, etc

Ok I have a new nntp server up and running.

Here is the deal.

If you want to feed me I will need your ip number for your bbs.
I will also need a list of usenet newsgroup you want.

I am looking for a list of local (just for us bbs's) groups that we can share.

Something like....

mbbs.sysops
mbbs.games.tw2002
mbbs.games.mmud
mbbs.users

ect...

Well, I have a dynamic ip, instead of a static IP, which means a power outtage or any thing like that would make the IP change. This could be a problem, now that we're getting closer to the storm season here in Florida. Already had 1 surge today. I guess we'll have to deal with that one day at a time, and if it gets too bad, i'll just have to buy dnews and change the configuration as needed, because I don't want to annoy people every-other day asking them to change my ip.

The mbbsnet sounds like a good idea too. Do you want to keep that as MBBS/WG topics only, or any topic?

(BTW, I just tried to add mbbs.sysops echo through the forums manager using the LC:mbbs.sysops, and it said that's not a valid echo.. so maybe you have to use a certain address type/name)

I think you will need to use US:mbbs.sysops as the echo. I will configure the server on my end to prevent the mbbs groups from going up stream to usenet.

As to the dynamic ip I think I can put a name in place of a number and let the dns server resolve it. If you are useing dynamic ip name service.

I just tried again, and it won't accept the mbbs.sysops or any mbbs.x name for any echo type in wg 3.30nt.

the US: tells the bbs that it is a usenet message then you put the newsgroup name. In this case we are useing mbbs for our private groups.
so the correct config should be...
US:mbbs.sysops

If you want me to telnet in I can set it for you.

Ok it is working.

I have not set up all the news groups but I have set up a sysop forum that is echoed to US:mbbs.sysops

Messages are going through the news server and to and from our two BBS's

I will post a list of all the private forums (mbbs.*) and I will have the feed to you include the rest of the groups you requested this weekend.
Some of the usenet names you gave me were not correct. I will update the list and send it back to you via email.

I got all of those listed from some big usenet backbone, from their active.add file, but not all news servers carry all of the newsgroups.

BTW, when you log back on, check out the door game server I've been working on. (G, 7, 1).
