Has anyone gotten Major BBS 6.25 or Worldgroup 1/2 DOS working under Virtual PC 2004?

My DOS computer's power supply crapped out, so I put the drive through the imager and made a vhd image (virtual pc hard drive image) - it boots, but I get an exception when I try to boot the BBS up... seems like some sort of memory issue..

Anyone ever try this?

never have, where can i get it ill try it i got 2 pcs i dont even use.

also ya need a PS? i do run a computer shop!

It was a PS that fit into an IBM Intellistation M Pro type-model: 6889-41U

I dunno if its worth it; I'd rather have it on a VPC.

I'v been using VMWare under NT 4.0 SP6 and didn't have any problems other than a long term memory leak (after several weeks the VM would lock up - out of memory). I just downloaded MS Virtual PC - heard that MS purchased the VMWare license/code and 'improved' it to work with NT 2000 and up. I'm trying to get my v.5.0 up, so if it works I suppose 6.25 should.

Dan, you're still not quoting properly. Just make sure what YOU type is not within the [ quote ] and [ / quote ] tags (spaces added to avoid parsing)...

Anyway, I have determined that VPC 2004 is not compatible with the Phar-Lap DOS Extender. VMWare GSX Server, however, IS. And that is what is running bbs.elwynor.com now.

hows that thing work as far as speed and performance?
i got a majorbbs 6.25 system running true-dos i might have to check it out.

i tried running it in xp before but seemed to lag down almost like it was emulating a 2400-9600 bps connection.

Thanks, Rick don't know it yet but I'm working on a Flash front end using Elwynor and Glacticomm,LLC graphics to use instead of the existing pages if a sysop wants too.

Naturally Rick will have to approve the design

Thanks for the info, I was planning on installing and testing MS VM, I'v been using VMWare from the beginning when you could get their 'beta' to test. I'ts always been great.

Now I don't have to try..

I have a customer who insists on keeping a voicemail system that will only run under Win95. I have VMWare running it on a Win NT 4 SP6 Workstation, which also has a VMWare VM running Linux for his web server. It runs just a fast as it did on a dedicated machine. [the workstation is an older Gateway E series PIII with 128MB and 40GB HD).

The performance of the BBS under VMWare is excellent. The performance of the native Win32 computer stinks. VMWare takes up all idle processor time, pinning processor utilization to 99%. So, I'd run it on a dedicated machine, but the upside is still that you can have a DOS BBS or two and a Win32 BBS or two running on the same box.

Sure..Send me an email describing your vision or thoughts behind using the name ArticZone, it will help steer me in the right direction for a logo that would match your original intent on choosing that name instead of my perhaps befuddled ideas...

I had that same problem, I'm installing VMWare as we speak *crosses fingers*

Oh yea, Virtual PC sucked, VMWare was like plug and play. I installed VMWare, install Dos 6.22, came right up with no modification needing to me done. I didn't even have to use MEM386 and it reads all of the memory.

Quest I can't figure out this Packet driver thing in WMWare it's the only thing holding me up. I see bits and peices of information on how to install it on the web but not a complete tutorial and SOOOO rusty when it comes to dos. Any help from anyone is appreciated.

Humm - well, actually, you need to install the packet driver for the VMWare network adapter that's in the DOS session - it's not exactly the same adapter as what you have in the computer! I believe its a simulated AMD card - this is what I use on elwynor:

Get that and load that in your autoexec.bat, and you're ready to go.

Just thought I would mention, Virtual PC 2007 is a major improvement over VP 2004 and WG seems to work fine.

Ahhh... hrm... WG3.2 is 32-bit only. The Virtual PC 2004 trials I did was to get the DOS version running. It failed miserably, although VMWare runs the DOS versions (6.25, WG1, WG2) like a champion.

Did you try VPC2007 with the DOS BBS?

No, but I can give it a try.

I was able to load up a Proprietary DOS specific Fire Alarm Monitoring system written in '89 (their DOS system had a harware failure and crapped out), by using Win XP, loaded up VM 2007 installed DOS using DOS 3.3 disks, then copied their backups across. It's running fine communicating with the receiver and phone lines.

I also manged to load up a VM2007 with Linux with Wine, then use Wine to run some windows games.

So far I've got VM's for DOS, Linux, Win 95, Win ME, Win 2000, Win XP Home and Win XP pro, NT 4.0 Workstation and NT 4.0 server (on a Win 2003 Standard Edition Server).

VM 2007 is MUCH better than 2004; although it does not have the variety and quantity of settings to fine tune it with that VMware does. It is a snap to set up.

Is there a way to run vm2007 and have TWGS on the same machine with my bbs(WG3.20)
I have XP pro with wg3.20 and want to have TWGS in a VM2007 window and have people logon from the bbs to the twgs.
In other words have both on the same machine instead of 2.

I would say yes, if your host has enough memory and disk space. VM2007 takes a separate IP and acts as a separate computer on your network. Just remember that whatever memory you set the VM to use, you loose on your host machine. What I do like however, is I set up a 40GB HD for the VM, but it doesn't actually use that space on the drive until it needs it, grows dynamically. You would just set up a menu option to telnet from your WG server to the IP of the VM for TWGS.

VM2007 is free, and it will run on WinXP. Worth trying.

the updated GALRLGN can do that to.

just put a command line -P# to rlogin to a seperate port #
then you can rlogin to the same local machine the bbs resides on.
