MajorBBS torrent on alt.bbs.majorbbs???

Greetings fellow BBS'ers!!

I've been a Sysop and avid BBS user for over 20 years now. This morning I noticed a new post to alt.bbs.majorbbs that included a link to a torrent of MajorBBS 6.25 with some modules. The post also said that it ran under windows and had telnet support.

Needless to say I was quite skeptical at the claims but seeing as how there isn't much BBS activity these days I downloaded the torrent to check it out. After an hour or so the torrent downloaded a file named MBBS4EVER.ZIP to my PC. Inside it was a zipped up BBSV6 directory and a text file named MBBS4EVER.TXT. After virus scanning the archive several times I opened the MBBS4EVER.TXT file with notepad followed the instructions. BOY was I surprised!

I've been running it for about an hour now and it appears to be what it says it is. The instructions are a bit amature-ish and seem to be a hodge podge of several different peoples comments but they worked just fine.

I think that its amazing somebody got MajorBBS AND MajorTCP running in windows. It's a great thing kind souls are still giving new life to old things. The name MBBS4EVER.ZIP seems very fitting. Does anybody know who made this? I'd like to send them a beer!! Well done!

aha. i'm pretty sure i know who you are.

you're involved with the guy OR you ARE the guy that posted it, arent you?

you shouldn't have let that 'jason hud' crack slip out. it was a dead giveaway.

there's been ONE guy that's been promoting those majorbbs torrents on piratebay like crazy. though this one person claims to not have anything to do with them.

yeah its actually act codes being used, seems like someone acquired a bbs from someone and posted it out rather than used it.

aaah i didnt download it but in canada i found a few sites that have old bbs's just zipped up figured someone got one and made it a torrent.

i dont read up on the scene anymore im developing the mud engine for worldgroup and thats it, that will be the only wg program i will develop.
i dont see a future in the software and with all the confusion and sites out there the consumers are confused as well.

There's no reason to lie and say that there are viruses in the MBBS4EVER.ZIP archive. It was a gift to the BBS community by several individuals who used MajorBBS for over 17 years. It includes everything it says it does nothing more notyhing less. From what's been said on usenet and the web it's sparked a mini-revival of MajorBBS systems. Quite a few public and private systems have gone up in the 2 months that it was released.

I've seen available for download on efnet, undernet, alt.binaries on usenet, edonkey, web archives, bittorent, dc++ and gnutella.

I wont post the torrent link again due to the stigma from the lies that it is tainted with viruses. It's simple to find Put MajorBBS or MBBS4EVER in google and a dozen places to download it from show up in results.

You can also download it from here

Damn, it looks like that torrent spread like wildfire. Even the creator of the bbs documentary dvd set has it for download on his site...

I also read Jason Scott's review here:

It's a nice review and like he liked it enough to put it up for download.

It still doesn't change the fact that it's pirate software.

how can you say this is pirated software? Of course, MajorBBS and WG were commercial software available for sale back when there was a BBS industry.

Now of course, this software is ancient history. I would consider the software abandonware based on the history of Galacticomm.

Is someone selling proper legit versions of Major BBS and WG? IF so please tell me where!

I'm sure someone would pay thousands of dollars now for MajorBBS as someone may have 15 years ago.

He can say it, because he owns them.
Just because it's old does not mean it's abandoned.

you'll want to step up to the NT core for the better games.
majormud,tele-arena II, tele-arena 6.0, WGME, all run the nt core.

of course the people that are posting that mbbs4ever package will say hey this has majormud too, but what they forget is the massive bugs in the dos versions of majormud.

I'm not going to argue about why major bbs should be free, cheap, or sold at all, considering the owner of this board claims ownership of it.

There are, however, some programs in the package that are still being sold by third-parties.

For whoever that said that people would pay thousands of dollars for major bbs, all I can say is that you should go take your anti-anxiety pills and think about it, and if you haven't changed your mind, then you need your head examined. OK, I'm just messin' with you... but the point is that sometimes when people come to a sight like this, after not knowing about these types of "projects" for many years, they can get over-excited, thinking of past bbs experiences.

Pop open a cold one, sit down, and relax... It's not as exciting as you may think. This isn't the twilight zone......

free i totally think is proposterous, cheaper than thousands..yes i agree.

i mean out of the box 3.20,[ not 3.30 cause thats a fork of 3.20 and not a good one i may add.]. anyhow out of the box 3.20 you can install it under windows, offer simple WWW services and afterall thats all a bbs needs is a simple http feeder, smtp/pop3 email services, telnet/rlogin access to a lot of good games i mean its still the same bbs package people did pay thousands for. works fine and in 3.12/3.20 i have had 'zero' crashes except for things i did in my own addons or some other developer did in an nt port of their program. NT is very touchy on misplacing variable identifiers in message blocks unlike wg2 was.

i have a bbs up with over 30 WGNT addons from myself and 3rd party developers, a new rlogin client i wrote that plugs into a sync door server and a tradewars game server and it does everything i as an entertainment bbs sysop would want with no problems.
thats why i stress 3.12 or 3.20 over 3.3, you run that you are all set.

in my opinion WG should remove the little user counts and go 25/50/100/256
$99/$149/$249/$349

thats for everything not this price for the server, this price for the ico, this one for this and that. So for 350 bux a sysop could host a 256 user bbs.
and with the src package they can mod their own server anyway they want.

lets go back to 1990-2000 you wanted a 256 user bbs with the full ico and src addon you paid a kings ransom.

i have connected to several bbs's over the last few weeks that werent running majormud that were quite active on some older games.

and when it comes to bugs if someone would submit me in an organized fashion i'll fix em and release it as an unofficial servide pack.
i know i have already fixed/added/modded several things in the 3.2 core.

but as it sits right now it will do its job.
