Da Spam....

Post by VeNoM »

Wasnt sure who to PM this to.... heh

Anyway, i run a phpbb like this one for the users of my board. I had a ton of spam problems too.
I ran across two very helpful mods.

First, i found one that gave me the option to notify the board op whenever a message was posted. This is great on small forums. Not sure it would work well here.

The other was an improved captcha for the sign-up process. it can be found here:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=473222

Just my .02, hope it helps.

Thanks for running this place!

im considering getting the phpbb source and doing a WG mod so sysops have to use their reg# to signup, as well as move to manual validation,
i mean its a WG community its not so large now where we cant manual verify the users.
ill talk to Rick see what he thinks.

That would be nice to see, even better if it was a drop in replacement for the current forums interface. You'd be able to use GALSQL.DLL (or so Questman called it) to power it rather than have appache/mysql or some other external power the forum.

Nods.. it'd be fun. Dan, what I was thinking - and since my time is limited, maybe you can take it over - was looking at phpbb, vbulletin, and invision powerboard - and combining the best of those features and coding an add-on based upon that.

PHP is horrible. I really hate it. So all of it would have to be re-written.

What I'd like a proof of concept on first, though, is a Java-based add-on to Worldgroup. Not applets; just using Java language to write an addon. It should be theoretically possible.

I'd love to convert WG to Java entirely.

It's beyond me why people signup with these crazy names only to fill in thier profile and don't post and most likely have no interest in the MBBS/WG project going on here. :?

well phpbb is a forums software package and has nothing to do with WG, i assume the reason we are using these is because 1) we can exceed 256 users, and 2) it gets picked up in search engines.

i talked with a guy a bit last year about some perl code that could be used with the c++ api to do the same thing but havent heard from him much this year, and now that the tele-arena database engine is done i been busy getting the editors complete so the game will be 100% customizable and all i will have to do is add the game commands and have it playable.
i did manage to get most of the ICO updated to use alternate ports, changed alot of port values to go as high as 65,535, and added some features such as the rlogin module text param, just havent fully tested it yet to make sure all goes well.

yeah i installed phpbb years ago for some friends that wanted a blog place for their poems, havent really tinkered with it since, im sure editing the signup.php to ask a few more questions couldnt be that hard, then when send an email to moderator or admin whoever who manually opens them up posting.
the community while a good place for users to find old bbs's to play on have the bbs ad forum free for all but the rest to sysops and wg developers.

the guy i originally bought the wg2 bbs i have which had the tele-arena sdk that actually compiled to the reg# was a java developer and spoke of it a thounsand times maybe i could get him in here and see what he thinks as a side project,

agreed that why i was thinking in the signup questions to ask for 8 digit wg reg# and maybe platform like worldgroup 2.00, worldgroup 3.20 etc...
then email would be sent to someone andl ike wg once read that user could be validated. then have people only that knows the product to talk shop in here.
leave the bbs ad forum unlocked and just monitor it for spam, would totally clean up the spam problems.

Yeah the only problem is with people that have interest and can't find thier manual for example but could prove owership or a few other scenarios that would not let them join. Almost need a srcipt that only humans can do and with an added captcha, then again allow them to post in just one forum (like this one) to filter them...then allow access to post in other forums.

in those situations they could contact Rick directly prove whatever and get their old reg# or he could issue them a new one.
