Tele Arena vs Wilderlands, and other questions

Post by Malakai »

I'm getting closer to purchasing a mud... I've had a good look at several muds, but I have a few questions and ramblings..

First of all, I like wilderlands, even though it isn't as colorful as tele-arena, but since I'm not a master of muds, can some one tell me how big the worlds are (how many rooms) and are they both playable and enjoyable throughout even the later levels, with out doing any editing?

Secondly, how does tele-arena handle death? Are there a certain number of lives, or lost levels, or lost stats when you die? I see most worldgroup/mbbs muds have some thing like this (including wilderlands) and I personally am not a big fan of lost stats or lives. If you lose levels, at least you can get them back (ala crossroads)..

Third, are there any maps of wilderlands and/or tele-arena, for those of us that don't know our way around muds too well (me lol)..

Fourth, if I were to buy tele-arena, would I have access to the modded versions and such that you are working on later on, or would I have to pay extra for those?

Last, do you know the prices you're going to charge for: crossroads and trade wars? and maybe an estimated time they'll be ready. This might tell me if I should wait and buy crossroads first...

thanks

Wilderlands II is much larger than Tele-Arena II. Tele-Arena II is very small - Sean intended to expand it in subsequent releases to keep interest, but the WG world fell apart before he could do this. As a result there are many "stubs" in the map...

WL2 can be expanded easily. It's build on a mud engine.

Don't quote me - and I should know this better but I forget - I believe you die, you die.

I don't have any maps - it was never a good thing to distribute them, as they'd ruin the fun of the game.

The TA2 expansion stuff is premature to talk about - I can't imagine that I'd charge for updates, and if the world expanded or if it was a major release with lots of new code and testing there might be a small upgrade charge.. but not like in the old days.

It's a tad premature. HVS and I are talking now - and its almost complete - but that information is a bit too soon to discuss. Suffice it to say that it will all fit within the current software's schemes... no more.

I have decided to go for wilderlands ii right now. Between that, mutants, and crossroads when they come out, I think I'll have enough muds. It was a pretty hard decision, because tele-arena is a lot more appealing to the eye and probably was more popular (at least part one) in the dialup days.

Thanks

I also have chosen Wilderlands II. I love the online ability to build the world. The only fault I can find is that the rooms have no displayable names or numbers. With out that the mapping features of the mud clients do not work so well.

In the last two days, I've been playing wilderlands II quite a bit, and practically half the day today and most of the night. There are a lot of little quirks in the game that I don't like but should be able to fix most of them.

The only ones that I can't do any thing about is the combat system, the healing system, and the limited ammount of items you can carry. This heal one hitpoint per 30 seconds stuff just makes it take about forever to heal, and if you can only carry 1 offense item, 1 defense item, and 4-5 rations, it's just not enough to go out and xp. So, you're forced to use the "rest" command.

A good example of this is if your character is at like level 2 or 3, you have 20 hitpoints. So, you're fighting some enemy that does as much as 6 damage average. Once you get down to about 6 hitpoints, you flee, and then have to rest every thirty seconds for 7 minutes to heal completely, then go back in, attack, and if the monster isn't dead, start the resting process all over again.

I hate to complain about the game. Just playing it 2 days, and getting to level 8, I'm almost burnt out on it now because of those things mentioned above.

Not being particularly satisfied with the items/healing/combat system on wilderlands, I downloaded mudmagic earlier, just to see how the combat and other stuff was on it, but it won't let me edit the class of a room. So, I don't think it will allow me to add monsters to it. Does it have to be registered to do this?

Also, I noticed when you enter the game, there is no menu, just a blank screen, on both HS BBS and on mine when I installed it.

Don't quote me - and I should know this better but I forget - I believe you die, you die.

its an option in tsgarn-c.msg set allow ressurections to yes, and set the cost in credits to ressurect. this value is from 0-1000 times the users level.
if you set it to 0 ressurection is free.

upon death you lose everything you're carrying including gold, 1% experience, and 50% of whats in the bank vault.

yeah but as rick said its built on a mud engine so easily changable as to where only thing you can edit in tele-arena is spells,monsters,etc... most good game enhancements come striahgt from c code.

anything you wanna know about tele-arena even rick can back this up, im the man. i been tinkering with this game a very long time.
and as soon as rick isnt so busy with work im gonna be submitting him a slew of fixes to restore the original game to bug-free and working with him on a modding system and i have over 80 yes eighty mods that will make that game azz kicking

are you saying that I can edit classes, the way combat is handled, how many items characters can carry, and how characters heal in wilderlands II? I can't find any information about this in the manuals or any of the gameop commands.

I'm going to try to add some spells to the spell directory to see if i can make a better healing spell in a bit..

as far as tele-arena mods and such, it really sounds like you guys are working on some thing good... can't wait to see the finished product.

Don't do it on my account. If you're going to get it anyway, go for it I guess. I don't mean to sound like a total klutz lol. I seem to find every bug in every game, even ones that don't happen with other people. I also didn't run an MBBS/WG system back in the dialup days. My poison was a 3 node PCBoard BBS in the early 90s that ran on DOS and quarterdeck's multitasking software.
