What's new?

Post by Malakai »

Well, I'm sure a lot of you want to know where the hell I've been lately. Probably around a year ago, I decided to make Nostalgia BBS run itself at another location, through a long-range wifi network. So, I bought up a bunch more wifi accessories, from repeaters, bridges, antennas, etc and then bought battery backups for all of servers.

There were a few problem modules on WG that I had to eventually take out, and the board hasn't had a crash since. In fact, the only time I had to reset the board was when a network flaw occurred on the server that had nothing to do with the pc.

The DMA server's fan went out, and that caused the first DMA server to blow. So, I set it up with what was going to be a temporary solution, one with a fanless cooler, and it's worked so well that I just haven't felt the need to replace it.

The door game server also had went down for a short while, due to some dust or something getting in between some of the contacts. After a good full motherboard cleaning, it was working like new again.

What's great about having my setup pretty much completely automated is that even if I don't have time for the BBS, it still stays up. Even when the ISP goes down, it's still up when they come back online. Even when a power outage occurs, the BBS is still up. Of course, if the power goes out for an extended period of time, it'd go down though.

Since doing the score board, adding the last of the door games, and all of the customization I've done on the telnet side of things, I've felt that the BBS is pretty much complete, with the exception of getting a new SQL server up and online.

Off and on, I've considered upgrading servers and hard drives and such, but that hasn't happened yet.

My DOS door server was also put on hold, because I just didn't have a lot of time to work on it. I know that I probably could have found a way around some of the multi-tasking and cleanup problems, but it would probably take a lot of patience and effort. At the time, it was decided that it probably wouldn't bring a whole lot of extra stuff to the table, maybe just a handful of extra games at most.

Linux rlogin capability is something that I also was trying to do, but with the version of linux I wanted to run, I could never get the network stuff working on. With later versions, it probably wouldn't be that big of deal, but just like the dos door server, it would bring limited extras to the bbs, and it's hard to tell if either would really be used much, if at all.

Dial up lines would have probably been one of the last things that I would have wanted for the BBS, but to be able to use those lines as a mini ISP for friends and family as well, and I don't think you can accomplish that with out buying major tcp/ip or some other program.

I haven't really done any more work on my sysop web control panel.

That's about it with the BBS... It's just running itself lol
