Considering Downgrade
Hello All:
After running with WG2 for the last month or so, I think I am going to downgrade my BBS to MBBS 6.25. But before I make this decision, I need to make sure that certain things will still work.
1. ICO and AIO (both WG1 versions)
2. The Entertainment Option (version 2)
3. Novell LAN Option for WG1
These are my only concerns. Mainly I have no need for the WG manager software and I think functionality wise, that is the main difference?
Anyhow, the other question is, can I save my User Database and use it under the MBBS as well?
Thanks for any input or advice on this.
Mike

and mbbs dont have a client side, so forget the manager. you might get away with the ent. coll.
but thats pretty much it. most of all the ICO
won't function or even load. have fun.

Hi there:
That is kind of what I thought, though I thought the ICO was the same in MBBS -- I could be wrong though, not the first time
I think you mis-read my post though regarding the Manager... that is precisely the part that I do NOT need. It seems to be a major pain in the lower area of one's anatomy
@everyone
Advice still welcome. I am thinking of having a Novell 5 server handle the Internet mail and then all we need is telnet coming in. So interested if the ICO is the ICO is the ICO... like Unix is Unix
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Everyone:
Well, I am at a loss, everything seems fine except I can not get any version of the ICO that I have found to work with MBBS 6.25. The ones that I have found that say they are for MBBS 6 actually appear to be for WG (possibly 1) and throw errors when installed. I dearly need to obtain an ICO file for MBBS 6.25 and one that is known working would be good.
If anyone can help, please let me know. I especially would like a copy of the original disk if possible. PMAIL me if you have one.
Thanks,
Mike

Having run MBBS since 5.0, and WG, I'v pretty much decided that 3.2, once installed, is pretty easy to manage, install, operate and reliable.
Personally, I got tired of dealing with Novell, DOS, multiple port serial cards, nic cards, and all the other things needed just to get a multi-line MBBS up and running on modems and telnet.
You can get legit copies of windows server for under 500.00 now if you look, and WG works great on it.
What am I missing

ICO was made to work with wg code, most of the libs
wg uses didn't exsist in mbbs back then.
but, vircoms tcpip will work in a limited way.

Hey Guys:
@ToyDuck
The whole purpose of my project is to run an old school BBS.
Mainly, I chose Major because I remember it being able to email the Internet and receive email from the Internet. I also know several folks have an installation running that accepts Telnet. The only reason I was even running WG 2 was because that is what I have the legit license to.
I always wanted to put a MBBS box up anyhow, even when I was running the BBS back in '91.
Hope that explains why I am wanting to go this route. WG 3.2 is a total departure from the "old school".
@frcorey
I know I can run Vircom's TCP/IP and have it working with Telnet in and out, but as you say, it's limited.
@all
if anyone knows of another way, I am all ears! I could go for any experience getting MBBS (specifically 6.x) to talk to the Internet.
I have the following available to me:
1. Novell Netware 5
2. Windows 2000 Server
3. Windows 98 SE
4. Novell DOS 7
5. MS-DOS 6.22
I could reinstall the board onto or configure it to work with any of these above. If there is a way to make MBBS 6.25 talk to an external TCP/IP stack and use external services, that may be the way to go.
At this time, the MBBS is on a DOS 6.22 box.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Considering Downgrade
ok what is the main reason for downgrading? as far as the bbs kernel itself both perform to about the same except wg adds the manager.nitromike2006 wrote:Hello All:

as far as entertainment download etlv6.zip from me its the mbbs version
for the databases i do believe but dont hold me to it, no additions were made to the db's.
check the USRACC.H on both packages and verify this.
you'll know by the size of the SPARE
ie: char spare[1002-961];
theres alot more things that go into effect when downgrading not just user databases, make sure the class table indexes are the same, etc....
best thing to do is install bbsv6 copy *.dat *.vir *.pre from your wg2 into this dir type bbs go once up log in, goto /go remote type cleanup 1 1
logoff. if you get no btrieve errors you're ok.
if you get btrieve errors and want to try to sort them out manually download btrieve.err from me its a master list of all btrieve code errors and what they are for.
for the ico you need ico1, i may have this but then again im not too sure.
i've actually been tinkering with majorbbs 6.25 last few days doing some y2k fixes, etc... if you go live with mbbs let me know you can be a beta center for my modules on majorbbs. that will keep me from having to run one of those as well. with a 4.0 / 3.2 / 3.12 / 2.0 setup no room for an mbbs as well.

*** SOLVED ****
Hello all:
I have completed the re-install of my BBS as MBBS 6.25
Decided to go ahead and use Vircom TCP and it works.
If any of you had logged onto the bbs and registered, you will need to do so again because I just wiped the drive and started over.
Thanks,
Mike
BTW: If you do register, please make sure you drop me an email on the system saying you are a member of this forum so I can give you better than demo access
