PCBoard Complete Internet Solution

Post by Malakai »

While I was thinking about ways you could incorporate my Score Server http://nostalgiabbs.servebbs.net/member ... eboard.htm in to a DOS-based BBS, particularly PCBoard, as well as thinking of a two NIC solution, I realized that you could probably run everything on one DOS PC, from incoming telnet, outgoing telnet, rlogin, ftp, whatever else the PCBIC offers, and then have a webserver host a bbs page as well as the Score Server.

In theory, you'd need 2 NICs, QEMM, Desqview, the ANSI2PNG program, PCBoard BBS, one of the two or three DOS web servers out there, and PCBIC. For just 1 node, you could use something like the commodore telnet bbs server, connected to a null modem cable from a windows PC. For 2 or more nodes, you'd probably want a hardware or *nix terminal server.

For more than 2-4 nodes, you'd also need a multiline serial device on the DOS PC for a hardware terminal server, or another multiline serial device on the *nix terminal server. An 8-port device would probably be great for PCBoard. 4-6 nodes for incoming telnet, and a couple dial-in or local nodes. PCBIC is setup to be a full-fledged internet service. So, you could even be dialin ISP with it, with out ever having to setup all of the "BBS" stuff. Heck, setting it up as an ISP would probably be a lot easier than setting it up as a full service network.

Why would you need 2 NICs? PCBoard has its own LAN/IP controls, and the web server would also have to have its own as well. One thing I'm not sure of is whether or not you'd need another NIC for every server/service, like if you added an FTP server, could that be used on the same NIC as the web server in DOS or not.

The other option would be to use the 2nd NIC as an MS network client and have pcboard copy over the score files to a mapped network drive. You may even be able to have PCBoard's file libraries on the mapped network drive so that an ftp server could be easily setup for the file libraries.

Let's face it.. PCBoard didn't come out of the package ready to be used as an MS Client or Server. It came setup for Novell, possibly lantastic, but the problem with Novell is that you have to setup a dedicated file server that doesn't do anything else from what the bits and pieces I've read about it.

Just figure out a way to set it all up with fidonet, newsgroups, and a couple door game leagues, and that'd be a full service board, running all under DOS (or dos and 1 windows machine) - I highly doubt there are any TRUE DOS BBS systems like this still around.

I have most of the pcboard 15.3 source code and it's a mess and won't compile.
